Contaminated Soil & Water Disposal

Advanced Environmental specializes in the removal and disposal of CONTAMINATED SOIL AND WATER.

Advanced Environmental will work closely and professionally with all insurance companies in reviewing and selecting the most immediate, appropriate, effective, and cost-efficient options when there is a spill event at your property. We take the fear out of oil tank issues with integrity and expertise. We handle ALL paperwork right up to closing the spill number and arrangement of all permits and inspections with local officials if applicable. Rest assured, Advanced Environmental has cultivated long standing relationships with all major insurance carriers and we have an excellent record for obtaining insurance coverage on most spill events! We have been in this business longer than most other companies in our region, and we know how to get your spill covered! We understand that the cost of remediation of contaminated soil and water can be very restrictive, and we do everything in our power to put your mind at ease!

After an underground tank has been removed and soil contamination is evident, we are obligated to report a spill event to the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (NYSDEC) who, in turn, issues a spill number. A spill number is similar to a lien on your property and must be satisfied, especially in the case of a real estate transaction. If your oil tank is 1100 gallons or more, we must also receive permits from the Westchester County Department of Health (WCDOH), and the tank must be registered with the WCDOH.

Before we can proceed with the removal of any contaminated soil or water for disposal, a soil sample must be taken to test for the Total Petroleum Hydrocarbons (TPH) in the soil in order for an accredited recycling facility to accept the soil and dispose of it properly. Once the sample results have been returned from a certified third party laboratory, we can then commence with the remediation.

If ground water has been affected, our technicians will use a vacuum truck to remove all contaminated liquid. If any liquidation keeps occurring, we may be required to install a monitoring well to track future leakage and contamination and the spill number will have to remain opened while monitoring the well for a period of time.

In order to remove contaminated soil, Advanced Environmental utilizes a full-size excavator in most cases. This process involves excavation, transportation and disposal of the contaminated soil. Soil can either be live loaded into a dump truck, or stockpiled onto plastic at the site for later disposal. After all of the contaminated soil is excavated, we will then take end point soil sample(s) to determine if all the contamination has been removed. End point samples are required by most insurance companies if they are covering the remediation.

Finally, Advanced Environmental will close the excavation using clean dirt or dirt/gravel mixture and restore the site to its original condition. We will then issue a closure report to the NYSDEC to request closing your spill number, issue to you an official Certificate of Completion and send all requisite reports to the municipal officials. It is important to note that the spill number is not closed until the NYSDEC issues a "No Further Action" letter at which time they will notify us via email.  They will put the “No Further Action” letter up on the NYSDEC website which is public information.  There is no actual hard copy letter sent to Advanced Environmental, or the homeowner, or their attorneys. If a monitoring well has been installed, we cannot request spill closure until the well is monitored for quite some time depending on the severity of the water contamination.

All work performed by Advanced Environmental is in accordance with applicable state and federal regulations in order to ensure the health, safety and welfare of our customers, the general public and the environment.
